GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's golf team will open the 2016 spring season Friday at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the par 72, 6,976 yard Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
The 54-hole tournament will begin on Friday and Saturday at 9:30 a.m, while Sunday's round will commence at 7:30 a.m. Furman will be joined in the field by Army, #26 UAB, UCF, #22 UCLA, Coastal Carolina, #42 East Carolina, Jacksonville, Liberty, #44 Louisville, #39 North Florida, North Texas, #18 Oklahoma State, #48 Tennessee, and Tulsa.
"We are all ready to get the spring season started," said Furman head coach Todd Satterfield, who is in his 20th year at the helm of the Paladin program. "Despite some of the weather we've had to deal with, I have been very pleased with the way this group has been playing. The Hayt is a great tournament on a great golf course and it looks like the weather is going to be terrific. I expect us to play well as we compete against some of the best teams in the country."
Hopke and Cole led the Paladins with a 73.8 stroke average over 12 rounds during the 2015 fall season. The Paladin duo each had one top-10 finish during the fall. Hopke fired a low round of 66 in the final round of the Golfweek Challenge, while Cole shot a 68 in the final round of the Camden Collegiate Invitational. Howell posted a 74.3 stroke average over the same 12 rounds and recorded one top-20 finish. He tallied a low round of 69 in the third round of the Camden Collegiate Invitational.
