CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Sophomore Bryce Howell (-5) fired a 69 to tie for second Sunday in the final round of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at the par 72, 7,242 yard UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Paladins (+1) claimed seventh place at the tournament.
Howell teed off of No. 1 and birdied three holes on the front to make the turn at 2-under before birdieing No. 13 and No. 18 on the back to finish the round three under par, posting a three-round total of 66-73-69=208. He tied with Maverick Antcliff (-5) of GRU Augusta, and the duo concluded the tournament two strokes behind individual medalist Ben Griffin (-10) of North Carolina who carded a 70 in the tournament's final round for a 54-hole total of 206.
Paladin junior Preston Cole (+4) birdied No. 6 and No. 13 on Sunday to tie for 38th after carding a final-round 74, while junior Preston Heyward (+5) shot a 73 with a birdie on No. 17 on Sunday to tie for 46th. Freshman Adam Garrett (+6) opened the round with a birdie on No. 1 and birdied No. 13, scoring a 76 in the third round, to tie for 52nd. Senior Michael Borton (+12) eagled the par-5 No. 5 to tie for 78th.
North Carolina (-26) won the tournament by 23 strokes over UNC Greensboro (-3) and East Carolina (-3), who tied for second. GRU Augusta (E), Kennesaw State (E), and Elon (E) tied for fourth, edging out the Paladins by one stroke.
Furman will compete at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club in Johnson City, Tenn., October 10-12.
