CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Sophomore Bryce Howell (-5) carded a 73 to finish the second round tied for fourth place overall and lead the Furman men's golf team Saturday at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at the par 72, 7,242 yard UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Paladins (-3) moved up five spots following Saturday's play, concluding the round tied for fifth place.
Howell birdied three holes on the front and made the turn at even par before birdieing No. 13 and No. 17 on the back. He finished the day three strokes back of leader Ben Griffin (-8) of North Carolina who holds a two-round total of 138 entering Sunday's final round.
Paladin junior Preston Cole (+2), senior Michael Borton (+2), and freshman Adam Garrett (+2) all enter Sunday's final round tied for 43rd place. Cole birdied the par-4 No. 2 and the par-5 No. 6 to score a 74 on Saturday, while Borton fired a 70 with two birdies on the front and two on the back in the second round. Garrett had a team-best four birdies on the front, including consecutive birdies on No. 6 and No. 7, and added a birdie on No. 13 for a 71 on Saturday. Junior Preston Heyward (+4) fired a 70 on Saturday with three birdies on the back nine to conclude second-round play in 59th place.
North Carolina (-26) holds a 19-stroke lead over East Carolina (-7), while Kennesaw State (-6) moved into third place following two rounds of play. GRU Augusta (-4) holds a one-stroke lead over Furman, who is tied with Maryland (-3) for fifth place.
The tournament concludes on Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m. Admission to the tournament is free and fans are welcome. Live tournament scoring will also be available via www.golfstat.com.
