Furman's Howell Ties For Third At Golfweek Program Challenge

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. --  Sophomore Bryce Howell (-11) carded a one-under 71 to tie for third and lead the Furman (+1) men's golf team Tuesday in the final round of the Golfweek Program Challenge at the par-72, 6,926 yard True Blue Plantation in Pawleys Island, S.C.   

Howell recorded back-to-back birdies on No. 2 and 3 then scored a birdie on No. 13 to finish the tournament eight strokes behind Tomasz Anderson (-19) of Jacksonville State, who scored a 60 with 12 birdies in Tuesday's round to win individual medalist honors.

Junior Preston Cole (+1) fired a 70 to lead the Paladins in the tournament's final round.  Cole notched a team-high five birdies in the final day of competition, including consecutive birdies on No. 10 and 11, to finish the tournament tied for 34th.  Senior Michael Borton (+5)  birdied No. 9 and No. 11, tying for 44th after carding a 73 on Tuesday.

Furman junior Preston Heyward (+8) tied for 51st after birdieing the par-3 No. 14 to score a 74 in the final round, while freshman Adam Garret (+9), who birdied the par-5 No. 4, scored a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to tie for 55th.  

Old Dominion (-31) fired a 10-under 278 on Monday to move into first place, finishing the tournament three strokes ahead of Jacksonville (-28).  Jacksonville State (-27) took third place, while the Paladins (+1) finished the tournament in 11th place.

Furman will compete at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate September 12-14 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
