PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. -- Sophomore Bryce Howell (-10) remains in a tie for the lead after carding a 3-under 69 to lead the Furman (+2) men's golf team Monday in the second round of the Golfweek Program Challenge at the par-72, 6,926 yard True Blue Plantation in Pawleys Island, S.C. Play was delayed for five hours due to rain on Monday morning.
Howell, who birdied No. 4 then notched consecutive birdies on No. 8, 9, and 10, finished Monday's round tied with Frank Medale (-10) of Jacksonville, who scored a 69 on Sunday and a 65 on Monday for a two-day total of 134.
Paladin junior Preston Cole (+3) birdied the first hole, making the turn at one over, then scored back-to-back birdies on No. 10 and 11 and birdied No. 15 to conclude the day even at 72 in a tie for 44th. Senior Michael Borton (+4) notched three birdies in the second round to enter Tuesday's play in 47th place, while junior Preston Heyward (+6) is tied for 52nd after carding a 75 in the second round with a birdie on No. 2. Rookie Adam Garret (+8) shot a 74 on Monday, birdieing the par-3 No. 7 on the front and No. 10 and No. 14 on the back. He is tied for 57th place following two rounds of competition.
Jacksonville (-23) scored a 15-under 273 on Monday to move into first place, just two strokes ahead of Old Dominion (-21). Valparaiso (-19) rounds out the top three. The Paladins (+2) enter Tuesday's final round tied for 11th place.
The final round of the 54-hole tournament, which includes a women's stroke play tournament at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and a men's competition at True Blue Plantation, begins Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.
