Furman's Cole Qualifies For U.S. Amateur Championship

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman's Preston Cole has qualified for the 114th United States Amateur Championship, to be held August 11-17, at Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga.  Cole, who recently competed his sophomore season on the Paladin team, captured medalist honors by one stroke with a two-under 72-68 at Brookside Country Club in North Canton, Ohio, earlier this week to qualify for the event.

A native of Greer, S.C., Cole competed in all 11 of the Paladins' tournaments as a sophomore during the 2013-14 season, tying for the Furman lead with a 75.2 stroke average over 33 rounds.  He was the Paladins' top finisher in four tournaments and recorded top 25 finishes in three tournaments over the course of the year.

Last season Cole fired a career-best 69 in the final round of the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic to tie for 25th place then tied for 15th at the Hayt Collegiate Invitational, a career-best finish.  He scored a career-best 217 over three rounds at both the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic and the Hayt Collegiate Invitational.  Cole was named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll and the SoCon Academic All-Conference team.

More than 300 golfers will open play at the U.S. Amateur with 36 holes of match play August 11-12.  The top 64 players following the second day of stroke play will advance to match play.  Each round of match play will be televised by the Golf Channel.
