Borton Tied For 11th Entering Final Day Of SoCon Championships

PINEHURST, N.C. – Junior Michael Borton (+4) carded a 73 on Monday to tie for 11th place and lead the Furman men's golf team following two days of competition at the 2014 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at the par-72, 7,122 yard National Golf Club in Pinehurst, N.C.  

Seeking their first title since 2010, the Paladins (+23) are in  sixth place heading into the final around of play, as leader Western Carolina (E) fired a 282 as a team on Monday to pull away from Georgia Southern (+4) and Chattanooga (+4).  

Borton recorded a birdie on No. 2 and made the turn at one-over before birdieing two holes on the back to maintain the one-stroke margin.  Paladin freshman Bryce Howell (+5) is tied for 17th after scoring a 74 with a birdie on No. 15 in Monday's round, and sophomore Preston Heyward (+7) birdied No. 17 to notch a 79 in the second round, placing him in a tie for 26th.

Sophomores Wehman Hopke (+9) and Preston Cole (+9) and tied for 31st entering Tuesday's final round.  Hopke birdied No. 8 and No. 10 to score a 77 in round two, while Cole carded an 80 with birdies on No. 4 and No. 15 on Monday.

Western Carolina's J.T. Poston (-10) maintains the individual lead after firing a 66 on Monday.  Poston, who is ranked 13th nationally, eagled the par-5 No. 8 and registered five birdies on the day to lead Roy Dixon (-2) and Carter Jenkins (-2) of UNC Greensboro by eight strokes entering the final day of play.

The Paladins will begin the final round of the tournament on Tuesday, teeing off of No. 1 at 8 a.m.

The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA regional, while the individual medalist will also earn an automatic regional qualification.
