GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's golf team will compete in the 78th edition of the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship Sunday through Tuesday at the National Golf Club in Pinehurst, N.C.
The tournament returns to Pinehurst for the first time since 1980 and will be played at the National for the first time. The Jack Nicklaus Signature course will play at par-72, 7,122 yards.
Furman's lineup for the 54-hole tournament, which tees off at 8 a.m. on Sunday, includes freshman Bryce Howell, sophomores Preston Cole, Wehman Hopke, and Preston Heyward, and junior Michael Borton. Cole leads the Paladins with a 75.1 stroke average over 30 rounds this season.
"This team has matured a lot throughout this year, and we have had a couple of weeks of great preparation since the Furman tournament.," said Paladin head coach Todd Satterfield, who is in his 18th year at the helm of the Paladin program. "We're ready to have a great SoCon Championship."
The Paladins will be looking to claim their first SoCon crown since 2010. Last season Chattanooga held off a late Davidson charge to win its second straight SoCon Championship, edging the Wildcats by two strokes. College of Charleston freshman Josh Lorenzetti shot a 2-under 70 to claim medalist honors as both the team and individual titles came down to the last hole.
The SoCon currently has four teams ranked among the top 100 in this season's Golfstat rankings. Georgia Southern leads the league at No. 47, while UNC Greensboro stands at No. 59. The defending champion Mocs are ranked 64th, and Davidson placed No. 100 according to the latest rankings.
The team winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA regional, while the individual medalist will also earn an automatic regional qualification.
