Hopke Leads Paladins With 72 In Second Round Of Brickyard Collegiate Championship
MACON, GA. -- Sophomore Wehman Hopke (-4) carded a second-round even 72 Saturday to continue to lead Furman at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship at the 7,128 yard Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club in Macon, Ga.
Hopke, who enters the tournament's final round in a tie for eighth place, registered three birdies on Saturday to conclude the second round four strokes back of leader Ollie Schniederjans (-8) of Georgia Tech, who fired a 67 in the opening round and a 69 on Saturday to move into the lead.
Sophomore Preston Cole (+6) shot a one-over 73 with birdies on 6 and 12 to tie for 46th place following Saturday's round, while freshman Bryce Howell (+8) also notched two birdies to card a 79, tying for 60th after the second round.
Junior Michael Borton (+10) enters Sunday's round tied for 70th after recording a 77 with two birdies in the second round, and sophomore Preston Heyward (+13) is tied for 78th following Saturday's round. Redshirt freshman Rob Knight, playing as an individual, carded a 75 in the tournament's second round.
Host Mercer (-20) surged into the lead with a 272 on Saturday, bypassing Georgia Tech (-19), who moved into second place, and Virginia Tech (-11), who dropped into third. The Paladins (+19) stand in 11th place out of 14 teams following the second day of competition.
Furman will tee off of No. 10 Sunday at 8:50 a.m. in the tournament's final round. Live tournament scoring will be available via www.golfstat.com.
