SIMPSONVILLE, KY. -- Sophomore Preston Heyward carded a par 72 in both rounds on Monday to lead Furman in the opening day of the Cardinal Intercollegiate at the 7,036 yard Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky. The Paladins (+11) stand in seventh place out of 15 teams following the first day of competition.
Heyward, who enters Tuesday's final round tied for 13th place, birdied three holes in each round on Monday to finish the day seven strokes back of leader Hampus Bergman (-7) of McNeese State, who fired a 67 in the opening round and a 70 in the afternoon round.
Junior Michael Borton (+4) registered an even 72 in Monday's second round after recording three-consecutive birdies on 17, 18, and 1, ending the day tied for 26th. Sophomore Preston Cole (+5) fired an opening round 73 after eagling the par-five 17th-hole and recording a birdie on No. 18 to finish the day tied for 29th with freshman Bryce Howell (+5), who birdied three holes in the second round. Sophomore Wehman Hopke (+7) recovered with a 73 in Monday's afternoon round to tie for 39th.
"I was really proud of the way our team competed today," said Furman head coach Todd Satterfield. "We have to keep making progress in order to reach our season goals."
Louisville (-9) holds a seven-stroke lead with a 9-under 567. Austin Peay State (-2) is in second place at 574, and Mercer (+6) is third at 582 entering Tuesday's final round.
The tournament will conclude with a shotgun start Tuesday at 1 p.m. Live tournament scoring will also be available via www.birdiefire.com.
