Former Furman Golfer White Named To U.S. Walker Cup Team
BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Former Furman golfer Todd White was named to the U.S. Walker Cup squad Sunday evening at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., on the final day of the U.S. Amateur.
Bobby Wyatt, Nathan Smith, Jordan Niebrugge, and Michael Weaver completed the team. Sunday's five selections join Michael Kim, Max Homa, Justin Thomas, Cory Whitsett, and Patrick Rodgers on the U.S. team slated to try and regain the title on Sept. 7-8 at National Golf Links in Southampton, N.Y.
White, who resides in Hilton Head, S.C., has two top-10 finishes this year on the amateur circuit, coming at the Jones Cup (6th) and the Northeast Amateur (5th), in addition to two top-25 finishes. He attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open and finished in a tie for 14th and also finished 25th at the Azalea Invitational. He won the Palmetto Amateur in 2010.
A history teacher at Hilton Head Island (S.C.) High School, White competed on the Paladin team from 1987-90. He was a four-time All-Southern Conference selection and posted four career tournament victories. His 73.85 career stroke average ranks fifth in the Furman record books. White was inducted into Furman's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.
