Paladins Compete At Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate
Aiken, S.C. – The Furman men's golf team posted a first round 295 and second round 299 to hold a share of 12th place after 36 holes in the 16th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par-70 Palmetto Golf Club on Monday.
Freshman Preston Cole (+9), senior Matt Brown (+9) and freshman Wehman Hopke (+9) are all tied for a share of 43rd place at nine-over par through two rounds. Cole, a Riverside High School product, fired a first round 71 before shooting 78 in the afternoon. Brown followed a four-over 74 in the morning round with a 75 in the afternoon while Hopke recovered from a nine-over first round to shoot 70 in round two.
Third place Matthew NeSmith of the University of South Carolina posted rounds of 68 and 69 to lead the Gamecocks (+10) to a one-stroke lead over North Carolina State (+11) after 36 holes. Augusta State (+14) and Virginia (+14) are tied for third place with Clemson (+17) and Liberty (+17) tied for fifth.
After a first round 71, Virginia's Mac McLaughlin shot a six-under 64 in the afternoon to grab the individual lead in a field that includes 18 teams and 90 players.
Final round action at the Palmetto Golf Club is set for Tuesday morning.
