Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. – Senior Matt Brown notched an even-par 72 to pace the Furman's men's golf team in the opening round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on Sunday at the par-72, 6,988-yard Sawgrass Country Club.
Brown (E) posted a pair of birdies over his final nine holes to earn a share of 25th place after one round. Senior Anthony Aloi (+1) birdied four holes during opening round play, but settled for a share of 33rd place after suffering double bogeys on two of his final three holes on Sunday.
The University of North Florida grabbed the first round lead with a tournament record tying 12-under 276, as the Ospreys lead second place Duke by six strokes and third place UCF by 10 strokes thru 18 holes. Furman is tied with Mercer for 13th place at 13-over 301. The 14-team tournament field includes 10 of the top-50 teams in the nation entering the spring season.
UNF's Kevin Phelan set a tournament record with an eight-under 64 to take the individual lead.
Second round action is set for Monday morning at 8 a.m. with the final round slated to begin on Tuesday morning.
