Chapel Hill, N.C. – Furman's Johnny Kyger fired rounds of 73 and 76 to pace the Paladins over 36 holes on the opening day of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Saturday at the par-72 UNC Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Kyger, at five-over par, grabbed a share of 44th place while the Paladins (+34) sit in 14th after rounds of 309 and 301. A native of Salisbury, N.C., Kyger birdied two of his first four holes in the morning round en route to a one-over 73 before bouncing back from two bogeys and a double bogey in the first seven holes of his afternoon round to post a four-over 76.
Senior Matt Brown (+6) moved into 47th place by playing his final 14 holes of the day at even par to shoot a second round 73.
Duke followed up a three-under 285 in the morning with a six-under 282 in the second round to open up an eight-stroke lead over Charlotte (-1) and North Carolina (-1) who are tied for second after 36 holes. UNC Wilmington, North Carolina State and East Tennessee State are tied for fourth place at seven-over par through two rounds.
North Carolina State's Albin Choi (-7) burst into the lead with an opening round 66 and fired a second round 71 to hold a three-stroke advantage over three golfers tied for second at four-over par.
Final round action at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate is set to get underway on Sunday morning.
