Greenville, S.C. – Troy University fired an opening-round 286 and the University of Georgia's Sepp Straka carded a six-under 66 to hold the lead after the first round of the 43rd Annual Furman Intercollegiate on Friday at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club.
The Trojans (-2) opened a two-stroke lead over Wofford (E) and Francis Marion (E) and three-stroke advantage over fourth place Clemson after 18 holes, while the host Furman Paladins (+8) posted a first round 296 to claim 15th place after round one.
Straka, starting at No. 10 and playing as an individual, shot 32 on the back nine en route to a 66 and two-stroke lead over Coastal Carolina's Sebastian Soderberg (-4) and Michigan's Matt Thompson (-4) who each opened tournament play with a four-under 68. Furman's Austin Reeves (-3), who claimed the 2009 Furman Intercollegiate title and is the reigning South Carolina Amateur champion, holds a share of fourth place following a round of three-under 69 on Friday.
"This is a very deep field in this year's tournament," said Furman head coach Todd Satterfield. "Thanks to Austin for saving us today, but everyone has to come out firing tomorrow for us to get into contention."
Round two in the 54-hole tournament is set for Saturday. The 21-team field will tee off in two waves with the first set for 8 a.m. and second round scheduled for noon. Final round action is slated for 8 a.m. on Sunday.
