Georgetown, S.C. – Matt Brown's second round 71 helped the Furman men's golf team into seventh place after two rounds on Sunday in the General Hackler Championship at the par-71, 7,189-yard DeBordieu Club in Georgetown, S.C.
Brown (+6), a junior from Brookeville, Md., improved on an opening round 77 by notching four birdies in the afternoon round to shoot even-par and move into a share of 15th place. He is tied with teammate Matt Broome (+6) who followed a first round 75 with a two-over 73 in round two. Senior J.B. Murphy (+8). who birdied four holes during the second round, carded rounds of 77 and 73 to grab a share of 27th.
Furman (+34) posted rounds of 302 and 295 to hold a two-stroke lead over Maryland for eighth place through 36 holes. North Florida (+14) holds the tournament lead after Sunday's rounds with Arkansas (+16), New Mexico (+19), Augusta State (+19) and East Carolina (+21) rounding out the top in the 15-team field that includes seven of the top 40 teams in the nation.
Sean Dale (-3) of North Florida holds the individual lead by two strokes over Coastal Carolina's Peter Valasek (-1) on the strength of a first round 69.
The 54-hole General Hackler Championship concludes with final round play on Monday morning. Furman is set to tee off from the No. 1 tee at 7:30 a.m. on Monday.
