Florence, S.C. -- Senior Matt Broome (-7) fired rounds of 68 and 69 to grab first place and help Furman (288-283=571) into the lead after two rounds in the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate on Monday at the par-72 Country Club of South Carolina.
The Barrington, R.I., native held third after a four-under 68 in the morning round, but jumped to a one-stroke lead over USC Aiken's Kyle Godsman (-6) and Charleston Southern's David Denlinger (-6) on the strength of a three-under 69 second round on Monday afternoon. Fellow senior Austin Reeves (+1), who redshirted last season after claiming the Southern Conference title in 2010, shot 74-71=145 to hold a share of 21st while Paladin freshmen Michael Borton (+2) and Josh Chay (+2) are tied for 27th after each carded identical scores of 73 in both rounds.
The Paladins (-5) leads second place Samford (-3) by two strokes with the College of Charleston four strokes off of the lead in third place. USC Aiken, Charleston Southern and host Francis Marion round out the top six in the 15-team field.
Final round play in the 54-hole, season-opening tournament is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
