Nov. 8, 2007

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman fullback Jerome Felton and offensive tackle Scott Shuford have been selected to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine University Division Academic All-District III football squad, it was announced today.

The squad encompasses Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) football playing institutions from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. To qualify for consideration, student-athletes must possess at least sophomore eligibility status and a 3.20 grade point average. Both Paladins will now appear on the national ballot. The ESPN The Magazine University Division Academic All-America Team will be announced later on this month.

Felton, a 6-foot, 239-pound senior from Madisonville, Tenn., carries a 3.28 grade point average in politicial science and is the top rushing fullback and leading scorer in Furman history with 2,528 yards and 402 points. A two-time All-Southern Conference selection, he currently leads Furman in rushing with 581 yards and 11 touchdowns, and is coming off a career best 154-yard, four-touchdown performance in the Paladins' 52-49 win over 14th-ranked Elon. Last year he set a SoCon record by rushing for six touchdowns in a 42-7 win over Western Carolina.

Shuford, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound senior, has registered 24 starts in his career at both tackle and guard and compiled over 1,600 snaps during his Paladin tenure. He is a two-time Academic All-District selection and sports a 3.66 grade point average in communications/religion.

Both players have been instrumental in Furman compiling a 33-15 overall record and 19-7 Southern Conference mark over the last three-plus seasons.

Furman has produced 15 football Academic All-Americans over the years -- twice as many as any other SoCon and state institution.
