GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman free safety Cam Newton has been named Southern Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Week for his performance in the Paladins' 45-10 win over Samford on Saturday.
A senior All-Southern Conference performer from Bennettsville, S.C., Newton tallied a game high 11 tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a blocked field goal in the contest. His forced fumble set up a Paladin touchdown that gave Furman a 14-7 lead, and he returned the fumble recovery 63 yards for a touchdown to put the Paladins ahead 21-7 midway through the second quarter. His block of a 36-yard field goal attempt just prior to intermission preserved a 21-10 Furman advantage.
Furman returns to action this Saturday when it travels to Boiling Spring, N.C., to take on Gardner-Webb in a 6:00 p.m. game. The Paladins defeated Gardner-Webb 45-0 a year ago in Greenville.
