Furman To Induct Six Into Athletics Hall-of-Fame

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Two football standouts, a highly decorated amateur golfer and distance runner, and former basketball great have been elected for induction into the Furman Athletics Hall-of-Fame, director of the Paladin Club Ken Pettus has announced.
All-America football offensive tackle Josh Moore `00 and nose guard Frank Moses `78, All-Southern Conference golfer Frank Ford `74, NCAA qualifier in the three and six-mile distance events Lee Fidler `71, and two-time All-SoCon basketball center Gerald Glur `63 will be enshrined along with honorary inductee Roger Thompson `52.
Induction ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9 at 4:00 in the Younts Center prior to the Paladins' home football game against West Georgia. Tickets to the dinner and ceremony can be purchased by calling the Paladin Club at (864) 294-3469.
LEE FIDLER (1971) -- Cross Country/Track (1968-71)...four-year letterman...served as captain of both cross country and track teams in 1970 & `71...four-time All-South Carolina selection in cross country, highlighted by fourth place finish his junior year and second place finish his senior year...two-time All-Southern Conference honoree in cross country following fifth place finish as a junior and second place finish as a senior...won South Carolina State Meet three-mile as a senior...captured Outstanding Meet Performer in 1971 after winning three-mile and six-mile events...qualified for the NCAAs in both events...competed in the six-mile at both the NCAAs in Seattle, Wash., and in the AAUs in Eugene, Oregon...six-mile time of 29:08 was a conference record...captured cross country and track MVP honors in 1971...in all set school records in two-mile indoors (9:17), two-time mile outdoors (9:05), three-mile (13:59), six-mile (29:08), and marathon (2:45:03) during his collegiate career...has won five marathons since graduation, including events in South Carolina, Atlanta, and Charlotte...three-time Olympic Trials qualifier in the marathon and five-time Top 20 finisher in the Boston Marathon...ran the 10th fastest marathon in the United States in 1975...holds Georgia records for 1/2 marathon (35-39 age group) and mile (45-49 age group)...at one time also held marathon records for South Carolina and North Carolina, and Georgia 10K (35-39 age group)...went on to coach at West Georgia, Appalachian State, and Georgia Tech.

GERALD GLUR (1963) -- Basketball (1961-63)...center...three-year letterman and three-year starter...two-time All-Southern Conference selection (1962 & `63)...led Furman in rebounding all three seasons and the SoCon in rebounding in 1962 (18.1 rpg)...ranks second all-time at Furman in rebounding (1,183/14.6 rpg), having compiled his numbers in only 81 games...trails only Jonathan Moore, who played in 117 games over four seasons...his 14.6 career rebounding average also ranks second in Furman history...claimed a Furman record 29 boards (second best in SoCon history) in a 74-71 loss to Richmond in 1963...scored 1,029 points in three seasons (12.7 ppg), ranking him 33rd on the school's career scoring ledger...member of Furman squads that went 15-11, 15-12, and 14-14 while also posting a combined three-year SoCon record of 23-18...1961 team beat South Carolina twice, LSU , and Clemson...1962 squad topped Clemson, Florida State, Virginia Tech, and South Carolina...1963 team claimed two wins over Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Wake Forest...member of 1961 Furman Poinsettia Classic championship team.
JOSH MOORE (2001) -- Football (1997-00)...offensive tackle...four-year letterman...three-year starter...2000 Sports Network, Walter Camp Foundation, and Football Gazette first team All-American...recipient of 2000 Southern Conference Jacobs Blocking Award...two-time first team All-SoCon selection (1999 & `00)...selected to play in 2001 Rotary Gridiron Classic...served as co-captain of 2000 Furman team, keying the Paladins to a 9-3 record and second straight NCAA I-AA playoff berth...helped clear the way for tailback Louis Ivory, who led NCAA I-AA in rushing in 2000 with 2,079 yards en route to capturing the Walter Payton Award (I-AA football's most prestigious award)...was a major reason in Furman setting a school single season rushing standard in 2000 (307.4 ypg)...also played a key role in Furman going 9-3 in 1999, winning the SoCon championship, and advancing to NCAA I-AA playoffs...was a starter on `99 squad that defeated North Carolina (28-3)...signed a free agent contract with Philadelphia Eagles in 2001...played the 2002 season for NFL Europe's Rhine Fire...was re-signed by Philadelphia in 2003 before being cut just prior to start of season.
FRANK MOSES (1978) -- Football (1974-77)...nose guard...four-year letterman and four-year starter...1977 All-Southern Conference and Furman Best Defensive Lineman selection...led Furman in tackles as a sophomore with 147 stops and as a senior with 163 tackles -- the highest season total ever by a Furman down lineman...totaled more career tackles (360) than any down lineman in program history...career tackles mark still ranks 11th all-time at Furman...had a career high 18 stops against Tennessee Tech in 1975, his sophomore year...despite playing with a compound dislocated thumb suffered in the third quarter, had a career high 17 stops in helping Furman to a 17-12 win over N.C. State in 1976...played a major role in Furman leading the SoCon in rushing and scoring defense in 1974 and in total defense in both 1974 and `75.
ROGER THOMPSON (1952) -- Men's Basketball....three-year letterman...served as team captain and averaged 3.9 ppg as a senior on Furman squad that posted 21-6 record -- the first 20-game winning campaign in Furman history...squad went from 3-20 the year before to 21-6 for most improved team in the country and beat Duke (73-72), South Carolina (73-64), and South Carolina (59-56), among many others...has spearheaded fundraising efforts in recent years that have generated over $600,000 in support of Furman's basketball prorgram.
