Furman To Renew Football Rivalry With South Carolina

Feb. 16, 2006

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman Paladins will renew their football rivalry with the University of South Carolina Gamecocks in 2010 and play again in 2014, it was announced late Thursday afternoon.

Furman and South Carolina will face off Oct. 2, 2010, and again on Sept. 20, 2014, at William Brice Stadium. The series renewal in 2010 will mark the first meeting between the Paladins and Gamecocks since 1982 when Furman defeated South Carolina 28-23.

South Carolina holds a slight 26-20-1 advantage over Furman in a series that dates back to 1892.

Furman dropped a 41-38 overtime decision to Pittsburgh in 2004 in its most recent clash against a I-A opponent. The Paladins' last win over a I-A foe was a 28-3 decision over North Carolina in 1999.

The addition of two contests against South Carolina is the latest in a number of future I-A opponents Furman has secured. Next year the Paladins play North Carolina, and in 2008 Furman will take on Virginia Tech. In 2011 the Paladins are scheduled to play Florida.

Furman posted an 11-3 record, advanced to the NCAA I-AA playoff semifinals, and finished the 2005 season ranked No. 3 nationally.
