Allen Edwards' Contract Not Renewed For 2006 Season
Jan. 1, 2006
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head football coach Bobby Lamb announced today that defensive interior line coach Allen Edwards' contract will not be renewed for the 2006 season.
"After careful consideration I've decided we need to move in a different direction from a staffing standpoint on defense," said Lamb on Thursday. "We certainly wish coach Edwards the best and appreciate his loyalty and dedication to Furman football over the years."
Edwards, who recently completed his eighth season as an assistant on the Paladins' staff, is a 1993 Furman graduate and member of the school's athletic hall-of-fame. He was an All-America and three-time All-Southern Conference nose guard selection during Paladin career (1988-91), and as a senior captured SoCon Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors.
A Spartanburg native, Edwards served as an assistant coach under Doc Davis at Spartanburg High School, his alma mater, from 1994-97 before returning to Furman in 1998 as defensive line coach. He holds a master's degree from Converse College.
"Julius Dixon (Furman's current defensive ends coach) will coach our defensive line during spring practice, and we'll complete the transition to our new defensive setup thereafter," added Lamb.
Dixon, a 1990 Furman graduate, has served as an assistant on the Furman staff for 13 seasons, including the last four years as coach of the squad's defensive ends.
