GREENVILLE, S.C. -- A season opening clash against defending Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) champion Clemson and early season battles versus familiar foes from the Colonial Athletic Association and Patriot League highlight Furman's 2018 football schedule, which was released today by director of athletics Mike Buddie.

Under the direction of 2017 Southern Conference Coach of the Year Clay Hendrix, Furman will kick off its 2018 campaign on Sept. 1 against Clemson, the reigning ACC and 2016 national champion in the 57th meeting between the two schools.

Furman will follow its matchup versus Clemson with a Sept. 8 battle at Elon, who the Paladins defeated, 28-27, in NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) first round playoff action last year.  The contest will mark the third meeting within the past calendar year between Furman and Elon, who also squared off in an early 2017 season contest at Paladin Stadium.

The Paladins kick off their home schedule when they play host to defending Patriot League co-champion Colgate on Sept. 15.  Furman began its 2017 season turnaround with a 45-14 road triumph over the Raiders — the first of seven consecutive wins that helped propel the Paladins into the playoffs.

East Tennessee State will provide the opposition in Furman's SoCon season opener on Sept. 22 in Johnson City, Tenn., where the Paladins claimed a 52-7 win two years ago.  This fall the Paladins and Buccaneers will meet in William Greene, Jr., Stadium, ETSU's new football home that opened last year.

A Sept. 29 matchup with Western Carolina will highlight Family Weekend and begin a three-game home stand that will also feature clashes against a pair of 2017 FCS playoff participants — Wofford (Oct. 13) and Samford (Oct. 20).  The battle with Wofford will mark the renewal of the Deep South's oldest football rivalry, which began in 1889.

Furman travels to Charleston on Oct. 27 to take on arch-rival The Citadel in the 98th meeting in the SoCon's oldest football series, which began in 1913 and that Furman leads 59-35-3.  The Paladins disposed of the Bulldogs, 56-20, in impressive fashion last year in Greenville.

Chattanooga provides the opposition when the Paladins return home on Nov. 3 and look to make it back-to-back wins over the Mocs, who fell 42-17 to Furman last fall.

Road games versus VMI (Nov. 10) and Mercer (Nov. 17), both Furman victims year ago, close out the regular season.

Furman posted an 8-5 overall record and 6-2 SoCon mark this past season en route to its league-leading 18th FCS playoff appearance.  The Paladins finished the campaign ranked 20th in the STATS FCS Final Poll.

Furman, which opens spring practice this Friday, is projected to return 17 starters off last year's squad, including all 11 regulars on defense.
