GREENVILLE, S.C. -- A season opening clash against its oldest rival and early season battles versus foes from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), and Patriot League highlight Furman's 2017 football schedule, which was released today by director of athletics Mike Buddie.

Under the direction of new head coach Clay Hendrix, Furman will kick off its 2017 campaign on Sept. 2 at Southern Conference rival Wofford in the 90th renewal of the Deep South's oldest football rivalry, which began in 1889.

The matchup with Wofford will be followed by the home season opener on Sept. 9 against former SoCon foe and current CAA member Elon.

The Paladins will then hit the road for a pair of games — a Sept. 16 contest at North Carolina State and Sept. 23 game at Patriot League member Colgate.

Furman handily defeated N.C. State, 42-20, in 1985, the last time the two met on the gridiron, a year after the Paladins knocked off the Wolfpack, 34-30.  Furman leads the all-time series with N.C. State, 8-4-4.

The Paladins claimed a 42-21 victory over Colgate in 2008 in their first trip to Hamilton, N.Y.

East Tennessee State is scheduled to provide the opposition on Sept. 30 when Furman returns home for Family Weekend.

An Oct. 7 clash at Chattanooga will be followed by a pair of home games against VMI (Oct. 14) and Mercer (Oct. 21), with the latter highlighting Homecoming Weekend at Furman.

The Paladins cap a stretch of nine consecutive weeks of competition on Oct. 28 at Western Carolina.

Following an open date, Furman is slated to enterain arch-rival The Citadel on Nov. 11 in the 96th renewal of the SoCon's oldest active football disagreement.

The Paladins conclude the regular season with a road contest at Samford (Nov. 18).

Four foes on Furman's 2017 schedule earned NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoff berths, and N.C. State is coming off a 41-17 thrashing of Vanderbilt in the Independence Bowl.
