GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman quarterback Chris Forcier (fore-see-A) today signed a free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, it has been confirmed.
Forcier, who completed a tryout with the Jaguars on Sunday prior to signing, becomes the fourth Furman player to ink a free agent deal with a National Football League team this spring, joining former Paladin teammates Ryan Steed (New York Jets), Ryan Lee (Pittsburgh Steelers), and Kadarron Anderson (New Orleans Saints).
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Paladin signal caller, who two weeks ago was named 2011-12 Furman Male Athlete of the Year, overcame a season ending shoulder injury against South Carolina in the second game of his junior season, returning to action this past fall to pass for 2,265 yards and a Furman season record 23 touchdowns en route to becoming the first Paladin quarterback to land first team All-SoCon honors since 1996. He completed 64.1 percent of his passes and set a school season passing efficiency standard of 172.36, which topped all Division I quarterbacks, including those in FBS.
In a 62-21 rout of Presbyterian in September, he broke eight Furman and SoCon single game records by throwing for 226 yards and seven touchdowns and accounting for eight touchdown responsibilities. Later he passed for 224 yards and two scores and rushed for 64 yards in Furman's 20-10 victory over third-ranked Appalachian State. He also completed a Furman record 20 consecutive passes over a three-game span. Named SoCon Player of the Week three times and Sports Network National Player of the Week once, the San Diego, Calif., native took home Furman MVP honors this past season.
He was awarded his bachelor's degree in history in absentia on Saturday while in Jacksonville taking part in the tryout.
Furman had two players on NFL rosters at the end of last season, fullback Jerome Felton '08 (of the Indianapolis Colts) who recently signed with the Minnesota Vikings, and cornerback William Middleton '09 of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
In addition Furman has two other former players in the Canadian Football League (CFL), wide receivers Brian Bratton '05 and Adam Mims '11 of the Montreal Alouettes.
A total of 18 Furman Paladins, including five draft selections, have signed contracts with NFL teams since 2000.
