Greenville, S.C. -- The Furman men's basketball team travels to Davidson, N.C., to battle the Southern Conference South Division leading Davidson Wildcats in a 7 p.m. contest Thursday at Belk Arena.
The Paladins enter the game at 14-13 overall and 8-8 in league play after Monday's heartbreaking double overtime loss to the College of Charleston. With Western Carolina falling to Appalachian State on Monday, Furman clinched a number five seed and first round bye in the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament at the North Charleston Coliseum.
The top five teams in the final regular season standings earn a first round bye and will open tournament play on Thursday, March 1, in the tournament's quarterfinal round. No team who has failed to receive a first round bye has won four straight games to capture the SoCon Tournament title.
In the previous meeting this season between Furman and Davidson, Thomas Sander tallied 24 points and nine rebounds to help Davidson overcome a 37-36 halftime deficit and down the Paladins 71-63 on January 10, at the Bi-Lo Center in downtown Greenville. Furman jumped out to a lead at intermission on the strength of a 9-for-12 effort beyond the arc, but the Paladins managed to connect on just 1-of-11 treys in the final 20 minutes. Jason Richards scored 18 points and Stephen Curry added 15 for Davidson, who notched a 39-24 advantage on the glass. Moussa Diagne and Eric Webb led the Paladins with 13 points apiece.
Furman concludes its regular season on Sunday when it visits Wofford for a 2 p.m. contest at Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, S.C.
