Furman Downs Johns Hopkins 91-55
Nov. 26, 2005
Greenville, S.C. - Freshman Stanley Jones scored a game-high 17 points and Furman raced out to a 57-26 halftime lead on its way to a 91-55 triumph over Johns Hopkins in men's basketball action Saturday evening at Timmons Arena.
"It was great to have a game like we did tonight where we were able to get a lot of people into the ballgame and work on several different things," said Paladin head coach Larry Davis. "We were able to give are starters some rest with a big lead which will help us to have fresh legs for Monday night's game at Campbell."
The Paladins shot a blistering 61.9% (39-of-63) from the field, including a 25-of-38 (65.8%) effort in the game's opening 20 minutes to open up a 31-point cushion. Jones paced Furman connecting on 8-of-10 attempts from the field while grabbing a game-high six rebounds.
Leading 23-11 with 10:27 remaining in the first half, freshman Alex Opacic drained a three-pointer to start a 14-0 run that upped the Paladin advantage to 37-11 with 7:56 left in the period and put the contest out of reach.
Opacic tied his season-high with 11 points while Robby Bostain, Moussa Diagne and Tony Carter each contributed 10 points. No Furman starter played more than 20 minutes in the victory over the Division III Blue Jays.
Danny Mawrocki scored 14 points and totaled five rebounds to pace Johns Hopkins. Matt Griffin also scored in double figures (10). The Blue Jays shot just 37.9% (22-of-58) from the field, but made 6-of-16 three-point trys.
Furman, 2-2, returns to the road Monday when it travels to Campbell for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. Johns Hopkins takes on Swarthmore in its Centennial Conference opener on Wednesday.
