Furman Tops Campbell 64-52 In Season Opener
Nov. 19, 2004
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Ben Earle scored a career high 16 points and was joined by Tony Carter for game high scoring honors to lead Furman to a 64-52 win over Campbell in the 2004-05 season opener for both teams Friday night at Timmons Arena.
Earle, a senior guard/forward from Standish, Me., came off the bench to connect on 6-of-9 field goal attempts, including 3-of-6 three pointers, and a free throw in 27 minutes of action to top his previous Furman career high of 10 points set last year against Chattanooga. Carter, meanwhile, went 5-of-6 from the field, including a pair of three pointers, and 4-of-5 from the line to help deliver the win to Furman (1-0), which also got 13 points from Eric Webb.
Campbell (1-0) was paced by sophomore guard Anthony Atkinson's 12-point performance.
"We're very grateful for the win," said Furman head coach Larry Davis. "I thought Campbell did a good job of throwing a lot of junk defenses at us with the triangle-and-two and box-and-one, which made it an ugly game, but we handled it well enough to win the game. It was good experience for us to get a look at a lot of different defenses, and anytime you hold a team to 52 points, that's good."
Furman shot 48.9 percent from the field, converting 23-of-47 shots, including 10-of-25 from three-point range. The Paladins' solid shooting helped offset Campbell's superior board work as the Camels, led by Cormerless Poole's 11 caroms, outrebounded the Paladins 37-27. The Camels, however, managed to convert only one free throw in eight attempts -- all in the second half.
Furman used hot perimeter shooting to grab an early 10-2 lead, and twice stretched its advantage to 12 points in the first 10 minutes of the contest following a three-pointer by Ben Earle at the 10:53 mark for the 23-11 lead.
Campbell answered with a 10-0 run over the next six minutes to tie the contest at 23-23 following an Atkinson trey with 4:05 to go.
The Paladins took a 34-30 lead into halftime after Webb buried a three-pointer from the left wing with two seconds to go.
Furman outscored Campbell 8-4 over the first five minutes of the second half for a 42-34 halftime advantage following another Webb three-pointer at the 14:39 juncture.
After Campbell closed to within four at 42-38 on a steal and layup by Diego Aguiar at the 9:17 mark, the Paladins fashioned a 7-2 run for a 49-40 lead following a steal and layup by Carter with 7:08 to go.
Campbell twice narrowed the lead to seven points down the stretch but Furman answered with bucket by Moussa Diagne and a free throw by Quan Prowell.
Furman returns to action on Monday when it takes on Auburn in Auburn in an 8:00 EST game. Campbell will entertain William & Mary Tuesday night in Buies Creek in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
