Ian Johnson scored 20 points and Brendan Winters added 19 to lead Davidson to a 77-59 victory over Furman in Southern Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Belk Arena in Davidson, N.C.
The Wildcats used an early 23-4 run to break open a 5-5 tie and give Davidson a 28-9 advantage with 9:56 remaining in the first half. Furman answered with a 12-4 run of its own to trim the lead to 32-21, but the Paladins were unable to get any closer the rest of the way.
Johnson and Jason Morton each buried a pair of threes to key the decisive run while Winters tallied six points during the seven minute spurt.
The win improved Davidson to 16-9 overall and 9-4 in Southern Conference play while Furman dropped to 14-11 overall and 7-6 in the league.
Morton joined Johnson and Winters in double figures with 14. Thomas Sander notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Davidson, who grabbed 17 offensive boards, out rebounded Furman 47-22 for the contest.
The Wildcats shot 50% from the field, including 59.1% (13-22) in the second half. Davidson converted 9-of23 three-point attempts and 12-of-17 free throws. Furman shot 41.5% (22-53) from the field and 7-of-14 from the foul line, but sunk just 8-of-17 chances from the charity stripe.
Moussa Diagne connected on 8-of-10 field goal attempts and 4-of-4 shots beyond the arc to lead Furman with 20 points. Jadee Jones tallied 10 points on the strength of a 2-for-2 effort from long range.
Furman continues its two-game road trip Monday when it travels to Charleston, S.C. to face The Citadel in a 7:15 p.m. contest.
