Darryl Evans poured in 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 shooting beyond the arc to lift Furman over Samford 63-58 in Southern Conference men's basketball action on Carolina First Court at Timmons Arena Monday evening.
Furman upped its record to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in the SoCon while Samford slipped to 9-11 overall and 3-5 in the league. The Paladins improved to 4-0 against Samford in Greenville, S.C.
Evans, a senior from Spartanburg, S.C., connected on three first half to treys to tally 11 points as the Paladins erased an early 20-11 deficit to claim a 31-30 halftime advantage. The lead changed hands 12 times in the second half before freshman Colin Reddick converted on a three-point play with nine minutes remaining to put Furman ahead for good at 50-48.
Leading 52-50, Justin Dehm buried back-to-back treys to up the Paladins' lead to 58-50 with 4:31 left and Furman held on over the final minutes to secure the victory.
Bryson Barnes tallied 11 points and five rebounds to join Evans in double figures. Dehm netted nine points, all in the second half, while Noah States scored eight and Amu Saaka contributed six points and a game-high eight rebounds. The Paladins shot 48.8% (21-43) from the field, including 53.3% (8-15) from three point range. Furman held a 29-25 rebounding advantage and committed just 11 turnovers.
Senior Bryan Friday led three Bulldogs in double figures with 16 points to go with four rebounds and four assists. Trey Montgomery and Josh Davis added 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Samford which shot 46.7% (21-45) from the floor. The Bulldogs committed just 10 turnovers, but made only 6-of-21 three-point attempts.
Samford returns home to host Appalachian State on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT. Furman travels to Wofford on Saturday to face the Terriers in a 3 p.m. contest at Benjamin Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, S.C. The game will be televised live by SportSouth.
