Jan. 18, 2006
Statesboro, Ga. - George Brozos buried a three-pointer with 36 seconds remaining and Tony Carter followed a Robby Bostain steal by sinking both ends of a one-and-one opportunity to lead Furman to a 66-63 victory over Georgia Southern Tuesday evening at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Ga.
The win, Furman's sixth in its last seven outings, snapped Georgia Southern's eight-game winning streak and 18-game home winning streak. With the victory, Furman improves to 10-6 overall and 4-1 in Southern Conference play, its best league start since the 1991-92 season.
Trailing 63-61 with less than a minute remaining and with under ten seconds on the shot clock, Furman's Eric Webb found Brozos on the right wing for his third three-pointer of the night to give the Paladins a 64-63 lead.
"Eric penetrated the lane and I just tried to find open space." said Brozos. "He did a great job of getting me the ball and I was able to hit the shot."
After a Georgia Southern timeout, Dwayne Foreman looked to drive the lane with less than 15 second to go, but Bostain knocked the ball loose for a steal and drew the six team foul against the Eagles. Elton Nesbitt quickly fouled Carter on the inbounds pass to send the senior guard to the charity stripe with five seconds on the clock. Carter sank both free throws to up the Paladin lead to 66-63. Nesbitt took the inbounds pass and rushed to halfcourt, but his desperation shot bounced off the left iron.
Junior Moussa Diagne led the Paladins in scoring with 15 points, including eight in the second half on 4-of-8 shooting. Brozos, 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 beyind the arc, added 12 points while Bostain chipped in 11 to round out Furman's double figure scorers.
Diagne, Bostain and Stanley Jones each grabbed seven rebounds for the Paladins. Carter contributed six points, six boards and four steals without commiting a turnover in 35 minutes of action. Furman shot 43.3% (26-60) from the floor and converted 8-of-20 (40.0%) three-point shots.
Donte Ginnie, who buried a three-pointer with just 1:06 remaining to put Georgia Southern ahead, paced the Eagles with 18 points. Nesbitt and Foreman joined him in double figures with 15 and 10, respectively. The Eagles shot 43.6% from the field and made 7-of-18 treys. Furman won the rebounding battle 38-31 while snagging 11 offensive boards.
After falling behind 12-3 less than four minutes into the game, Furman put together a 30-11 run to give themselves a 33-23 advantage with 3:20 left in the half. Furman led 37-30 at the break and saw the lead change hands on four occasions before pulling out its second win in its last three trips to Statesboro. Georgia Southern grabbed its first second half lead with 8:21 remaining and held the edge until Daigne's dunk at the 3:12 mark knotted the game at 59-59.
Furman, who now holds a share of the SoCon South Division lead, returns to action on Saturday when it hosts The Citadel in a 4:00 p.m. contest at Timmons Arena.
