Furman Begins Second Half Of SoCon Schedule With Trips To Mercer, The Citadel

Furman vs. Mercer Game Notes

Greenville, S.C. -- The Furman men's basketball team begins the second half of its 2017-18 Southern Conference schedule this week when it visits Mercer on Thursday at 7 p.m. and The Citadel on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Furman moved to 15-7 overall and 6-3 in the SoCon with a 100-66 victory over Western Carolina last Saturday at Timmons Arena. Devin Sibley led the way with 23 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while John Davis III added 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Matt Rafferty scored 13 points, Clay Mounce totaled 11 points and six rebounds and Daniel Fowler scored 10 points to round out the Paladins' double figure scorers.

Sibley continues to pace the Paladins averaging 15.3 points per game and needs five points to move ahead of George Singleton (1,690 points) for 10th on Furman's career scoring ledger. With three treys last Saturday, Sibley tied former Paladin Anthony Thomas for third on the school's career three-pointers made list with 199. Eric Webb holds the career record with 273 three-point baskets, while Justin Dehm connected on 214 triples during his career.

Thursday's contest marks the 24th meeting between Furman and Mercer on the hardwood with the Paladins holding a 13-10 series lead. Furman won its fourth straight versus the Bears and fifth in the last six meetings with a 74-71 triumph at Timmons Arena on January 6. Senior Daniel Fowler scored 21 points to lead five Paladins in double figures, while Desmond Ringer paced Mercer with 22 points and seven boards. The Paladins claimed a 70-68 victory at Mercer last season on a Fowler basket in the final seconds to complete the season sweep of the Bears. Furman is 3-7 all-time versus Mercer in Macon, Ga.

The Paladins will also be going for a regular season sweep of The Citadel on Saturday. Furman cruised to a 107-67 win over the Bulldogs in the first meeting of the season on January 4, in Greenville. Saturday's game marks the 209th meeting between the Paladins and Bulldogs with Furman holding a 122-86 series lead. Furman has won four straight in the series and captured a 99-91 victory in Charleston, S.C., last season.
