Paladins Fall Short At Butler, 82-65

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Tyler Wideman paced four Bulldogs in double figures with 19 points and Butler shot better than 57% from the floor to down Furman, 82-65, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Butler (3-1) took control of the game by ending the first half on a 16-3 run. Furman's John Davis III drained a three-pointer to give his team a 26-25 lead with 5:21 to play in the period, but the Paladins missed their final nine shots of the half as Tyler Wideman scored nine points over the final five minutes to give the Bulldogs a 41-29 lead at intermission.

Furman (2-1) trimmed the margin to 10 at 54-44 in the second half, but another Bulldog run helped put the game away as Butler hit three treys in an 11-2 spurt to open up a 65-46 lead.

Wideman 7-of-12 shots and connected on all five of his free throws to lead the Bulldogs, while Kamar Baldwin added 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Sean McDermott and Paul Jorgensen combined to hit seven threes to score 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Senior Daniel Fowler led Furman with 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Junior Matt Rafferty and senior Devin Sibley added 11 points apiece.

Butler shot 57.4% from the field and made good on 10-of-23 three-point attempts. Furman out-rebounded the Bulldogs 30-29, including 12 offensive boards, but shot just 40.4% The Paladins recorded eight steals in the loss.

Furman returns to action on Monday when it faces top-ranked Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium as part of the PK80: Phil Knight Invitational. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra and available on the WatchESPN app. The audio broadcast will be available on FoxSports 1440AM, via the TuneIn Radio app and through Stretch Audio at Live statistics will also be provided through StatBroadcast and the link will be posted on the school's official website.
