GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman University Director of Athletics Mike Buddie issued the following statement regarding Niko Medved, who has accepted the head coaching job at Drake University:

"Coach Niko Medved and his staff have put Furman basketball on the map, and I am extremely thankful for his effort and the way he has represented Furman University during his time on campus. Because of their efforts, Furman will be a very attractive destination for many coaches from across the country, and the search for his replacement has already begun.  We wish Niko, Erica, and Aly nothing but the best as they embark on this new chapter in their lives."

Buddie said assistant coach Bob Richey would serve as the Paladins' interim head coach until the end of the season.

Furman (23-11), which defeated Campbell, 79-64, on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, will play at St. Peters on Wednesday in a 9:00 PM semifinal contest that will be televised over the CBS Sports Network.

Medved compiled a 62-70 record over four seasons at Furman, taking over a moribund program and coaching the Paladins to win totals of nine, 11, 19 and 23.  The Paladins claimed a share of the 2017 Southern Conference championship — the program's first since 1991.
