Gardner-Webb Stifles Furman, 73-53

Greenville, S.C. -- Adonis Burbage came off the bench to pace Gardner-Webb with 16 points and the Bulldogs shot 57.1% from the field en route to a 73-53 victory over Furman in men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena.

The Bulldogs (4-6) connected on 66.7% of their field goal attempts over the opening 20 minutes to carry a 34-28 lead into the break. After the teams traded baskets to open the second period, Gardner-Webb fashioned an 8-0 run, capped by back-to-back three-pointers from Dylan Poston and Tyrell Nelson, to extend the margin to 44-30 with 16:21 remaining.

Furman (5-4) trimmed the deficit back to 10 points on five occasions over the next 10 minutes, but Burbage scored the first eight points of a 10-0 run with under seven minutes left to push the Bulldog lead to 65-45 with 4:53 left.

Burbage made 6-of-11 shots, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, while Nelson contributed 14 points, seven boards and three assists. David Efianayi and Poston rounded out the double figure scorers for the Bulldogs with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Gardner-Webb, 28-of-49 from the floor, made 8-of-18 threes and finished with a 30-23 edge in rebounding. The Bulldogs tallied 17 points in transition and managed a 30-26 advantage in points in the paint.

Senior Stephen Croone scored a team-high 16 points and dished out six assists for the Paladins. He was joined in double figures by Devin Sibley who netted 10 points. The Paladins shot 39.2% from the field, but made good on just 5-of-28 three-point attempts against Gardner-Webb's zone defense.

Furman caps its four-game homestand when it hosts Bluefield on Wednesday, December 16, at 7 p.m. The Paladins close out 2015 with trips to Dayton (Dec. 19), Navy (Dec. 22) and UNC Asheville (Dec. 29).
