Furman vs. Columbia Game Notes

Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's basketball team opens its 29-game regular season schedule on Saturday when it hosts Ivy League member Columbia University in a 7 p.m. contest on Court at Timmons Arena.

Saturday's season opener marks the third all-time meeting between the Paladins and Lions with the series knotted at 1-1.  Columbia, under the guidance of head coach Tom Penders, claimed a 93-79 victory in Greenville in the first meeting between the schools on December 29, 1976, before Furman evened the series with a 62-58 triumph in New York, N.Y., last November.

In last season's meeting, the Paladins trailed by double digits in the first half and faced a six-point deficit with under eight minutes remaining before Colin Reddick ignited a rally with five straight points as Furman outscored the Lions 22-12 down the stretch.  Bobby Austin, who returns for his sixth year with the Paladins in 2012-13, netted 13 points in the victory.  Brian Barbour paced Columbia, picked third in this season's Ivy League preseason poll, with 16 points in last year's loss to the Paladins.

Furman scored a 77-68 victory over NCAA Division II Limestone College in exhibition action last Saturday at Timmons Arena.  Twin brothers Charlie and Colin Reddick poured in 17 and 16 points, respectively, as Furman opened up a 58-43 lead before settling for the nine-point win.  Austin scored 15 points while redshirt freshman Keith Belfield added 13 points to give the Paladins four players in double figures.
