Tom Mastny Named Carolina League Pitcher-of-the-Week

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Former Furman pitcher Tom Mastny has been named Carolina (Class A) League Pitcher-of-the-Week following two strong outings last week for the Kinston Indians, the league has announced.

The 6-foot-6 righthanded Mastny, a 2003 Furman graduate, went 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA in two appearances last week, recording victories over Frederick and Potomac. Against Frederick he hurled five innings, surrendered only four hits and a run, and recorded eight strikeouts in a 6-4 win, and against Potomac he tossed 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball while also striking out eight in a 4-3 decision.

On the season he sports a 5-2 record with a 2.54 ERA.

A native of Zionsville, Ind., Mastny posted an 11-2 record and NCAA leading 1.09 ERA for Furman in 2003 en route to earning All-America honors. He was drafted in the 12th round by the Toronto Blue Jays and spent two seasons in the Jays' organization before being traded to the Cleveland Indians last December. In 2004 with the Jays' Class A Charleston (W.Va.) affiliate, he went 10-3 and paced the South Atlantic League with a 2.17 ERA, and was also a S.A.L. All-Star selection.
