May 24, 2006
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman shortstop A.J. Davidiuk, catcher Tony Maccani, and first baseman Case Cassedy have been All-Southern Conference in voting by league head coaches, it was announced today.
Davidiuk, who was also named player-of-the-year Wednesday, was a first team selection along with Maccani. Cassedy garnered second team honors.
Davidiuk (Day-vah-DUKE), from Indian Trail, N.C., batted .372 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI in leading Furman to a 32-21 regular season record and 16-11, third place finish in the SoCon. He batted .430 with eight home runs and 31 RBI in conference play and was twice named league player-of-the-week, TIAA-CREF student-athlete-of-the-week, as well as conference player-of-the-month for April.
Maccani, from Cincinnati, Ohio, hit .364 with six home runs and 47 RBI while starting in 51 games behind the plate this spring. He collected SoCon Player-of-the-Week honors earlier in the year after helping the Paladins to a pair of wins over Coastal Carolina and West Virginia. He also threw out 35 percent of opponent base stealers.
Cassedy batted a team leading .380 this year with seven home runs and a team leading 58 RBI. He paced the SoCon with 23 doubles and hit for the cycle in a 17-11 win over Appalachian State on Apr. 23 on the way to capturing national hitter-of-the-week honors. The Tallahassee, Fla., product also delivered a key two-out, two-run double in the Paladins' 5-4 victory over then sixth-ranked Clemson on Apr. 19.
Furman's 32 wins this spring matched a school season record first set in 2003.
