May 23, 2005

Furman righthander Nick Hollstegge was named Southern Conference Pitcher-of-the-Week on Monday by the league office after helping the Paladins to a three-game series sweep of Davidson and SoCon Tournament bid.

Hollstegge appeared in all four Furman games last week and earned a win and a save during the sweep of the Wildcats. He earned the win in Friday's series opening 9-6 win over Davidson as he came on with one on and one out in the eighth with the Paladins trailing 6-5. He retired the side in order over the final 1.2 innings to earn the win. Hollstegge also pitched the final inning of Furman's 11-7 win on Saturday and nailed down a save in Sunday's bid-clinching 5-4 triumph over the Wildcats, working the final 1.1 innings including a perfect ninth inning.

The West Chester, Ohio, native has limited opponents to just five earned runs on 14 hits while posting a 2.75 earned run average in 16.1 innings pitched since returning from an early season injury. Prior to recording a save in the season finale on Sunday, Hollstegge had recorded saves in victories over nationally-ranked Tennessee and South Carolina.

Furman, who enters this week's SoCon Tournament as the eighth seed, will face top-seeded College of Charleston in a 1 p.m. contest Wednesday at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park in Charleston, S.C.
