May 14, 2007
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman freshman pitcher Nicholas Karow has been named Southern Conference Pitcher-of-the-Week for his work in a pair of baseball victories last week.
Karow, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound freshman right hander, earned the first two saves of his career last week in Furman's 9-7 win over Charleston Southern and 6-3 triumph over nationally 16th-ranked Clemson, combining to throw 2 2/3 innings of one-hit, shutout ball that included no walks and five strikeouts.
Against Charleston Southern the Lewis Center, Ohio, product worked a 1-2-3 ninth with a pair of strikeouts to nail down the win. The following night at Clemson, he hurled the final 1 2/3 innings and struck out three to secure the win, the Paladins' second straight triumph over the Tigers and fourth victory in the last six games against Clemson.
Karow began the season as Furman's backup catcher, and in 21 games, including 15 starts, has hit .240 with one home run and six RBI. His home run came in the eighth inning and proved to be the game winner in a 6-5 victory over Lafayette on Mar. 13. He made his first mound appearance against Georgia on Mar. 28, working a scoreless inning of relief.
Furman returns to action on Tuesday when it takes on Georgia State in Atlanta in a 6:00 p.m. game.
