Furman's Ben Hunter Named Southern Conference Pitcher-of-the-Week
April 19, 2005
Greenville, S.C. -- Furman freshman Ben Hunter has been named Southern Conference Pitcher-of-the-Week, the league announced today.
A 6-foot-3 freshman right hander from West Chester, Ohio, Hunter improved to 5-3 on the season by allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out seven in seven innings of work in a 12-0 shutout of Western Carolina on April 16. He threw 5 2/3 innings of no-hit ball before giving up a single and retired 13 consecutive Catamounts during one stretch.~ The shutout, part of a three-game Furman weekend sweep of Western Carolina, marked the first time the Paladins had blanked the Catamounts in the 104-game history of the series that dates back to 1968.
Hunter's strong outing against Western Carolina highlighted a comeback for illness that saw him miss a regularly scheduled start against UNC Greensboro on Apr. 2 after being diagnosed with food poisoning.
Furman, currently 14-19 on the season and 7-10 in SoCon play, takes on Charlotte tonight in a 6:00 p.m. game in Charlotte.
