College Of Charleston Defeats Furman 9-1

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- Reid Price tossed 6 2/3 strong innings as 22nd-ranked College of Charleston completed a three-game sweep of Furman with a 9-1 victory before 778 at Patriots Point Field on Sunday.

Charleston, which has won nine in row, improved to 38-9 overall and 22-2 in league play. Furman dropped to 22-23 and 10-13.

The Cougars scored four times in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead. Brian Hastings, Phillip Coker and Byron Barber had RBI hits and another run scored on a throwing error by the Paladins.

After Furman cut the margin to 6-1 on Tony Maccani's RBI single to right in the seventh, the Cougars put the game away with a three-run eighth inning. Gardner's double to right center scored Brett Anderson and Coker followed with a two-run single that plated Hastings and Gardner for the final margin.

Price (4-1) allowed a run just four hits with six strikeouts. Brett Harker earned his 11th save working the final 2 1/3 innings with two strikeouts. Ryan Hodinka (6-4) allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits over the first 3 2/3 innings in suffering the loss.

Furman got two hits each from Sam McLain and Maccani. Gardner, Coker, Barber, Chris Campbell and D.J. Wabick added two hits each for Charleston.

Charleston plays host to Charleston Southern in a 6:00 start on Tuesday. Furman plays at South Carolina on Wednesday at 7:00.
