College Of Charleston Holds Off Furman 6-4

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- College of Charleston scored three times on four consecutive hits with two outs in the fifth inning en route to a 6-4 Southern Conference win over Furman before 847 at Patriots Point Field on Saturday.

Charleston, which improved to 37-9 overall and 21-2 in league play, has won eight in a row. Furman fell to 22-22 and 10-12. The Cougars have won the first two games of the series.

The Cougars broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth on three straight doubles and a single. Matt Kirkpatrick doubled to left center off Furman relief pitcher Ryan Hudson with two outs in the fifth. He scored to give Charleston a 4-3 lead when Oliver Marmol bounced a double just inside the bag at third.

Marmol scored and Gardner's double to left, and Gardner scored to give the Cougars a 6-3 lead when Phillip Coker lined a single to left.

Furman cut the margin to 6-4 in the eighth on A.J. Davidiuk's solo homer to center with one out, his seventh of the season.

Harker recorded his 10th save of the season and allowed a run on a hit with three strikeouts over the final 2 1/3 innings.

Danny Gemma (7-2) picked up the win for Charleston allowing three runs over 6 2/3 innings. Gemma walked none and struck out four. Hudson (2-3) suffered the loss in relief allowing three runs over 4 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.

Gardner went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Chris Campbell had his 23-game hitting streak snapped going 0-for-3 at the plate.

Ben Terry, Case Cassedy and Nick Wadja had two hits each for the Paladins.
