Furman Tops 18th-Ranked Tennessee 3-2
April 27, 2005
KNOXVILLE, TENN. -- Nick Holstegge pitched 2 1/3 innings of one-hit relief and Furman out-hit Tennessee 14-7 en route to a 3-2 win over the 18th-ranked Volunteers Wednesday evening at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The victory was the first for Furman (18-20) over Tennesee (30-13) in five meetings and first over a nationally ranked team since a 10-8 win over then 14th-ranked Clemson in the 2003 season. The Paladins have won seven of their last eight games.
With Furman leading 3-1, Holstegge came on in relief of Ryan Hudson (1-2) in the seventh inning and threw a wild pitch, allowing Michael Rivera to score from third base to make it 3-2. Holstegge recovered, however, by striking out Eli Org to end the inning and retired the Volunteers in the eighth and ninth to finish with four strikeouts and earn his first save of the season.
Furman starter Matt Klinker allowed one run on five hits with two walks and one strikeout in four innings of action. Hudson then entered the game and gave up one unearned run on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.
Sam McLain went 3-for-4 and tripled in the fourth inning to drive in Case Cassedy to tie the game at 1-1. He later scored on a groundout to give the Paladins a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth Nick Wajda, who also had three hits, doubled with one out and scored on Ben Terry's single to center field. Terry, Andrew Greene, and Matthew Betstill also had two hits each for the Paladins. Furman entertains UNC Asheville on Friday in a 7:00 p.m. game at Furman Stadium.
