BOONE, N.C. -- Ryan Stetson's one-out, bases loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Wes Hobson to give Appalachian State a 5-4 win over Furman Saturday in the second game of a three-game weekend series.
The Mountaineers (17-6-1, 4-6-1 SoCon) go for the series sweep against the Paladins (8-19, 2-9 SoCon) on Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. game.
Hobson led off the Mountaineers 10th with a single off Paladin reliever Stephen Gary, who then walked David Towarnicky to put runners at first and second. Marc DeDecker was summoned to replace Gary, and following a Jeremy Dowdy sacrifice that advanced the runners, Mark Zupic was intentionally walked to load the bases. Stetson followed with a solid single to left field to score Hobson for the game winner.
Chris Patterson (1-1), who allowed a run in relief over the final three innings, earned the victory while Gary (0-1) took the loss.
Furman lost despite a two home-run performance by freshman first baseman Paul Nitto, who went 3-for-5.
Hobson went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI for Appalachian State.
Both teams had nine hits.
Furman trailed 1-0 after an inning but quickly drew even in the second on Nitto's first roundtripper of the game, a solo shot to right field off Mountaineer starting pitcher Tyler Jackson. The Paladins went to plate two more runs in the frame on a Cameron Allmendinger RBI single and wild pitch, which plated J.B. Jenkins.
Appalachian State took advantage of a pair of Furman errors to score a run in the fifth and took a 4-3 in the seventh on a Hobson two-run blast off Paladin starter Kevin Gaid.
Furman tied it in the eighth with a one-out home run by Nitto to left field.
