JACKSONVILLE, Ala.--Michael Rumpke's bases loaded single up the middle in the top of the ninth led Furman to a 6-2 victory over Jacksonville State Saturday at Rudy Abbott Field.
Rumpke went 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored after pinch hitting for Paul Ortenzo.
Freshman Ben Hunter (4-1) managed eight strike outs and gave up two unearned runs in eight innings of work.
JSU got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, when Clint Carroll scored on a Furman throwing error after stealing second and advancing to third base on a wild pitch.
Gamecock pitcher, Jon Clements, held the Paladin batters quiet through six and a third innings, allowing four Furman hits.
JSU answered in the bottom of the seventh and tied the game 2-2, when Brian Haskins doubled to left-center field, with two outs, scoring Brian Piazza from second base.
Joe Daysh's one-out single loaded the bases in the top of the ninth. Matthew Betsill and Nick Wajda then scored on Rumpke's single to give the Paladins a 4-2 lead. Furman padded its lead by tacking on two more runs in the inning.
David Mitchell closed out the Gamecocks by striking out two and causing Haskins to fly out to left field to end the game.
Furman and JSU will meet for the third and final game of the three-game series on Sunday. First pitch at Rudy Abbott Field is set for 1 p.m.
