RALEIGH, N.C. -- Brian Brown pitched seven innings of shutout baseball and 12th-ranked N.C. State used a pair of home runs to roll past Furman, 10-0, in the opening game of a three-game baseball series Friday afternoon at Dail Park.

The win improved N.C. State to 5-1 on the season while Furman fell to 3-2.

Brown, a senior left-hander, had near total command, registering eight strikeouts and surrendering only three singles and a hit batsman over his seven frames in improving to 2-0 on the season.  He threw 92 pitches, including 63 strikes.

The Wolfpack gave Brown all the support he would need in the fourth, taking advantage of a dropped fly error at the start of the inning to score three unearned runs, Josh McLain's two-run double highlighting the inning.

N.C. State chased Paladin starting and losing pitcher Grant Schuermann (1-1) in the sixth after he gave up a leadoff walk and a pair of RBI singles.  Schuermann's replacement, Tyler Kimbrell, surrendered a three-run home run to Brett Kinneman, the first batter he faced, that made it 8-0.

N.C. State finished off its scoring in the seventh with Kinneman's second home run of the game, a two-run shot to center field.

The Wolfpack banged out 11 hits, with Kinneman going 3-for-5 with five RBI.

The two teams play Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
