GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Will Owens went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored and Furman's bullpen turned in another strong performance in propelling the Paladins to an 8-3 victory over Toledo in baseball action Friday afternoon at Latham Stadium.
Furman (5-5) and Toledo (3-4) are scheduled to play game two of the three-game weekend series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Owens reached base and scored his first two times to the plate and delivered an RBI single in the fourth inning to give Furman a 6-3 lead.
Hunter Burton, who also had two hits in the contest, stretched the advantage to 8-3 an inning later with a two-out, RBI single that drove home Paul Nitto and Alex Abrams.
The Paladins finished with 10 hits, including a pair of singles by Will Miller. Zack Greenwell also drove in two runs.
Furman starter Bobby Lyne (2-1) used the solid run support from his teammates to overcome early trouble. The senior right-hander allowed a run in the second and two in the third before settling down to retire the Rockets in order in the fourth and fifth.
In this sixth Furman's defense aided Lyne as an accurate relay throw from second baseman Will Muzika to Greenwell retired Toledo's Matt Delewski at the plate following a Dan Zuchowski double. Lyne then yielded a single before being replaced by Stephen Gary, who induced a double play grounder to end the inning.
Gary worked 1 2/3 innings of one-hit relief and combined with Matt Solter and Alex Abrams to help Furman's bullpen toss two-hit, shutout ball over the final 3 2/3 frames.
The Paladins grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first and added three more in the second for a 4-1 lead against Toledo starting and losing pitcher Mike Hamann (0-2), who yielded eight runs, seven of which were earned, on eight hits in four-plus innings. He walked three and struck out one.
Zuchowski led the Rockets at the plate with a 3-for-4, 2-RBI performance.
