ELON, N.C. --Sophomore Chloe Kowalski placed second in the individual race to lead the Furman women's cross country team to a fourth place finish at the 2009 Southern Conference Cross Country Championship Meet on Saturday morning in Elon, N.C. The Paladin men's team finished sixth with 146 points behind a ninth-place finish by junior Charlie McGoogan.
Samford won the women's meet with 74 points, followed by Elon with 75 points and Appalachian State with 83 points. Furman scored 93 points to take fourth place. Kowalski posted a time of 18:04.39 on the 5K course to earn All-Southern Conference first team honors, while Paladin senior Brittany Johnson placed 11th with a time of 18:59.68 to earn a spot on the all-conference second team. Junior Jenna Callahan was 20th, posting a time of 19:10.04, and freshman Emily Wirzba was 26th with a time of 19:21.86.
Appalachian State won its fourth-straight men's championship, scoring 44 points, while Davidson was second with 82 points and UNC Greensboro third with 83 points. McGoogan posted a time of 25:41.68 on the 8K course to garner All-Southern Conference second team accolades, and sophomore Lee Gilmer placed 24th with a time of 26:19.43. Sophomore Chris Caldwell was 35th after completing the course in 26:45.17, and freshman Wilkerson Given was 40th with a time of 26:53.91.
