On a unseasonably cold and blustery day at the Irwin Belk Track Complex for Track & Field and Kelsey-West Track on the campus of Furman University, track & field enthusiasts got their fill as runner Alan Webb became the first person to break the four-minute mile on a South Carolina track with his time of 3:57.83.
Webb was the lone runner in the 12-man field to break four minutes in the ASICS Blue Shoes Elite Mile Run, part of several weekend activities to raise money for Furman's Blue Shoes Track Scholarship program. Approximately 3,000 people were on hand to witness the Elite Mile race.
Despite temperatures in the low 40s and gusting winds, the 9th Annual Furman Invitational proved a success. In the collegiate meet, seven meet records fell, all on the women's side. Furman's own Chibuzo Agoucha broke her own records in both the long jump and the triple jump, with marks of 5.80m and 11.77m, respectively.
Lady Paladin Page Bridges posted a time of 11:10.32 in the 3000m steeplechase, topping the old record by 15 seconds. The Furman women had three of the top four times in the 800m run. Lindsey Barker won the event, crossing the finish line in 2:19.08, while McKenzie Sharpe was close behind with a time of 2:19.55. In fourth place was Rebecca Mullen with a mark of 2:21.91.
In the women's 5000m run, Lady Paladin Holly Stewart ran an 18:07.93 in a first-place finish. Teammate Guinn Garret took third place with a mark of 18:40.24.
The East Tennessee State women had a very successful meet, breaking four meet records. Jenny Knox (100m dash), Nae-Nae Bailey (200m dash), Anna Marie Ricciardi (high jump) and Brook Beraducci (shot put) all set new Furman Invite marks.
On the men's side, four Paladins earned first-place finishes. Joseph Tenini outlasted teammate
Alex Plasencia for first place in the 5000m run with a time of 15:31.78. Plasencia crossed the finish line in 15:39.31 after the pair had been neck-and-neck for the majority of the race. In the 3000m steeplechase,
Eric Albrecht turned in the fastest time of 9:29.86. Dustin Gourdin won the triple jump with a mark of 12.54m after finishing second in the long jump. In the javelin throw,
David Moseley beat the field by nearly 2.5 meters with his throw of 48.17m.
The Furman track & field teams will compete at the Solid Orange Classic on the campus of Clemson University on Saturday, April 14.
